What BMX Bike Size Should I Get?

Maybe you are looking to get into BMX for the first time, or maybe your child had a growth spurt, and their old bike is no longer a good fit for them. For whatever reason, you are looking to get a new BMX bike there are guides to what size bike you need based on your height. If you stick to these guides, then you will be able to have a great riding experience and master all the tricks your heart desires.

When it comes to bike sizing, it is good to know that there is a good chunk of overlap between sizes. So if you have a personal preference for a larger bike or a smaller bike, then you can go up or down a size. For example: if you are 5’8″ then you could use a size Pro bike, which is for people between 5’3″ and 5’8″ or you could choose to use a Pro XL which is for people between 5’7″ and 6’0″. If, as a BMX rider who is 5’8″, you prefer a smaller bike then you would go with a Pro bike, but if you prefer a bike that is a little bit larger, than you would go with a Pro XL bike.

The size of a BMX bike will vary widely and in all aspects of the bike. A Micro bike, which is for people 4’4″ and under, has a toptube length of 5″ – 16.5″, a stem length of 25mm-35mm, a bar rise of 2″ – 2.5″, a bar width of 20″ – 22.5″, a crank length of 145 – 155 mm, and gearing of 41-43 / 16. A Pro XXL bike, which is for people 6′ and over, has a toptube length of 12.25″ – 22″, a stem length of 52 mm – 60 mm, a bar rise of 8″+, a bar width of 28″, a crank length of 180 – 190 mm, and gearing of 44/ 16 and up.

If sizing your bike is an issue for you, or if you are below a Micro size bike or larger than a Pro XXL size bike then you may want to go the custom route. This can also be a great option for those who straddle two bike sizes but want a bike that is more tailored to their height. This is especially important if you start getting into competitions, whether racing or tricks. Having a bike that fits you perfectly will help you go faster and land tricks better. It also means that if you like variations between sizes on your bike, you will be able to customize it.

Even though you may be 5’8″ you may have shorter or longer legs, which would mean that you want a different size bike than someone else who is also 5’8″. It is all about finding a bike that suits you, your proportions, and your desires. You are unique, and so you may need a bike made unique for you.
